A few days ago my friend Daren and I went on a short road trip to Northampton, Massachusetts. Daren was going there to play a show and I decided to tag along. It was an easy drive, probably three and a half hours, barely even a road trip. The show was in this guy George's (he runs Breaking World Records) basement. He had a very nice house which had the largest collections of Atari games, records, and exploitation films I have ever seen. On the bill was Driphouse (Daren), Sick Llama, Infinity Window, Treetops, and Northampton Wools. There were about 40 people there when we first arrived but as the night progressed the crowd dispersed leaving maybe 20 people at the most. All the bands were good, but I think my favorite set of the night was that of Infinity Window.
The show ended with a performance from Sonic Youth front man Thurston Moore's guitar noise duo Northampton Wools. They sat in chairs, guitars in laps, attempting to spastically strike their prepared guitars with what looked like dentist tools. The set wasn't very interesting (probably my least favorite of the night) and their energy seemed phoned in. However, at the end they started thrashing around trying to crowd surf. That part was kind of cool.
We spent the night at George's. I fell asleep watching Escape from the Bronx. The next morning we woke up, drove to Amherst, and had a delicious breakfast at a restaurant called, "The Lone Wolf."
Andy and I are 30 minutes away from leaving for Washington D.C. to go see the O'Bama inauguration. Can't wait.
